BEFORE…

The owners of this suburban home sought to move away from a monoculture of lawn and non-native plants, recognizing that their garden offered no function or benefit to wildlife, the soil, or their family. By removing the expansive front lawn, they not only reduced the need for frequent mowing—cutting down on carbon emissions and costs—but also introduced a variety of native plant species. This shift has significantly boosted biodiversity, attracting vital native wildlife that depends on these plants for survival.

Landscaping with functionality is important when considering the long-term sustainability of our urban spaces, and the way they contribute to the greater system. The garden was planned for greater water catchment, and with shade and privacy in mind.

Utilising non-natives for functionality (strategic shade and food) is equally important.

Transforming this family's approach to gardening allowed them to incorporate more native shade trees, which helped cool their surroundings during the summer heat. The addition of extra plants and functional root systems not only reduces harmful runoff but also retains moisture in the soil, resulting in healthier, greener plants even during dry seasons.

Improving the soil health and taking advantage of the block’s position, water catchment and spaces meant greater productivity and fertility.

With many native plants blooming prolifically through winter, this family now enjoys vibrant beauty year-round, not just in spring. The winter flowers function is to also provide a crucial food source for pollinators, supporting local ecosystems while enhancing the garden's aesthetic appeal.
